What is Endodontic Treatment?

Knowing the anatomy of a tooth is important to understanding endodontic treatment. A tooth has white enamel on the outside, and a hard layer called dentin beneath. Inside the dentin is a soft tissue called pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, extending from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the roots. The pulp connects to the tissues surrounding the root and is important during the growth and development stage. Once a tooth is fully mature it continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it and can survive without the pulp.

When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, then endodontic treatment is necessary. Repeated dental procedures, deep decay, or cracks and chips can all cause inflammation and infection. If left untreated, the tooth can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

How Does Root Canal Therapy Save a Tooth?

We can help save your tooth by removing the infected pulp and carefully cleaning and shaping the inside of the root canal. Then we seal the space and place a crown or other restoration on the tooth to restore it to full function and provide protection. After the restoration is placed, the tooth will look and function just like the rest or your teeth.

Symptoms to Look Out For

Pain, prolonged sensitivity to cold or heat, tenderness to touch or chewing, discoloration, and tenderness in nearby bone and gum tissue are all indicators that you may need root canal therapy. Sometimes there are no symptoms, so it is important to attend your bi-annual oral health check-ups and cleanings. When you come to visit us on a regular basis, we can detect the signs of infection and intervene to save your tooth and keep your smile healthy.
